New Delhi: On 20th Aug, Following the Supreme Court’s formation of a National Task Force (NTF) for medical professionals, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) expressed its approval of the decision. The association also reaffirmed its ongoing push for a central law to protect medical professionals through an ordinance.

In a statement, the IMA announced a virtual meeting with state presidents and secretaries scheduled for 9 PM tonight.

“IMA HQs welcomes the Hon. Supreme Court’s intervention. We will collaborate with the committee on safety and security matters. However, our demand for a Central Law to combat violence through an Ordinance remains. The struggle continues,” the official notice read. Additionally, the IMA plans to meet all Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) tomorrow in Delhi.

The Supreme Court constituted a 10-member National Task Force to provide recommendations on curbing violence and ensuring safe working environments for medical staff. Among the members is Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin.

The move comes in response to the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, which ignited nationwide protests.

The Supreme Court, taking suo motu cognizance of the case, instructed the task force to deliver an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months. The task force has also been tasked with developing strategies to prevent gender-based violence and promote a dignified workplace for interns, residents, and non-resident doctors.

Additionally, the apex court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide an update on its investigation into the rape case and directed the West Bengal Government to submit a report on the August 15 mob attack at RG Kar Medical College.

Meanwhile, the CBI continued its investigation into the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, receiving approval to conduct a polygraph test on the suspect. On August 18, the agency used 3D laser mapping to examine the emergency ward at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Simultaneously, the West Bengal Government set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital dating back to January 2021.

Calls for justice intensified, as prominent figures from the Bengal music industry, including actor Saheb Chatterjee and radio personality Mir Afsar Ali, led protests on Monday against the tragic incident at the medical college.
