The Supreme Court issued a notice to the state of Tripura regarding a plea challenging the alleged illegal termination of 79 teachers. The petitioners argue that the terminations were arbitrary and unjust.

New Delhi: Seventy-nine teachers approached the Supreme Court, accusing the Tripura state government of unlawfully terminating their employment. The petitioners claim their dismissal carried out en masse via two memorandums dated December 23, 2017, and March 31, 2020.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and PB Varale issued a notice to the Tripura government, seeking its response to the allegations made by the teachers.

The writ petition, filed by graduate teachers, asserts that they unjustly stripped of their positions after a decade of dedicated service. They argue that this action left them destitute, deprived of their dignity and livelihood, and violated established legal procedures.

Filed by Advocates Tarini Nayak and Aditya Mishra on behalf of the dismissed teachers, the petition describes their termination as arbitrary.

Highlighting the severe impact of the state’s actions. It states,

“More than 160 teachers have either resorted to suicide or died under mysterious or suspicious circumstances,”

The petitioners further contend that many of the terminated teachers, despite being qualified and competent, have been left unemployed or forced to take up menial jobs such as rickshaw pulling, housekeeping, or farming to survive.

A critical claim made in the petition is the existence of a large-scale scam within the Tripura government. The petitioners assert that their employment status and salary codes remain “active,” suggesting that their monthly salaries, amounting to crores of rupees, are still being debited from the public exchequer. They allege that these funds are being misappropriated by certain state officials, indicating significant corruption.

In summary, the petitioners moved the Supreme Court seeking justice and reinstatement, accusing the Tripura government of illegal and unethical practices that have severely impacted their lives and well-being.

The teachers’ case against the Tripura government set to be closely monitored, as it highlights the critical issue of safeguarding employment rights and ensuring that governmental actions adhere to the rule of law. The Supreme Court‘s involvement underscores the importance of judicial oversight in maintaining fair and just administrative practices.
