BREAKING | "Don't See God in Us, See God in Justice": Supreme Court Justice MM Sundresh Breaks the Myth of God-like Judges

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India gave an important reminder to everyone that judges should not be treated like God, but the true respect should go to justice itself.

During the proceedings, when a lawyer emotionally said:

“Judges are like God for us,”

Justice MM Sundresh gently corrected this view with a powerful and humble statement.

He said:

“Don’t seek God in us, seek god in justice. We are just humble servants.”

This meaningful quote made it clear that judges are there to serve justice, not to be worshipped.

The statement came in reaction to a serious complaint by a lawyer. The lawyer was upset over a notice sent by someone, which wrongly accused lawyers of “fixing judges.”

He called this kind of statement “contemptuous.” In response, the court asked the lawyer not to take it too personally or emotionally.

Justice Sundresh said clearly:

“Please don’t get emotional. As judges all this doesn’t bother us.”

The Supreme Court showed that such claims or emotional words don’t disturb their mindset, and they remain focused on delivering fair justice.

This is not the first time a top judge has spoken against the idea of seeing judges as divine beings. Last year, the former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, had also spoken on this issue.

While speaking at a conference in the National Judicial Academy in Kolkata, he warned against giving god-like status to judges.

He had said,

“When we are addressed as ‘Honour’ or as ‘Lordship’ or ‘Ladyship’, there is a very grave danger … and people say that the court is a temple of justice. There is a grave danger that we perceive ourselves as deities in those temples.”

He added that while he had personal spiritual values, he remained cautious about such praise.

“Therefore speaking for myself, though I have my own set of personal values which are deeply personal to me, I am a little reticent when I am told that this is a temple of justice because the temple postulates that judges are in the position of a deity.”
