Supreme Court Collegium Proposes Justice NV Anjaria as Karnataka High Court Chief Justice

Judge N V Anjaria of the Gujarat High Court was recommended by the Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud- led by Supreme Court collegium on Wednesday to become the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice NV Anjaria recommended as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. The appointment will take effect on February 24th, after the approval of the Central Government and will take place after the retirement of the Justice PS Dinesh Kumar, the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

Justice NV Anjaria has been serving as a judge on the Gujarat High Court since his appointment in November 2011. He practised in the High Court before being elevated, specialising in civil and constitutional cases. Other areas of practice included company law, labour and service, and civil and constitutional law.

The Collegium proposes to appoint Mr. Justice N V Anjaria as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka with effect from the date on which the incumbent Chief Justice demits office on retirement,” the collegium, which also included Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B R Gavai, stated.

A fair representation “shall be given to various High Courts for selection of Chief Justices,” states paragraph 3 of the Memorandum of Procedure pertaining to the appointment of a High Court’s Chief Justice. Judges’ inter-se seniority will be determined by their seniority in their respective High Courts for the purposes of this selection. Chief Justice nominations will be chosen on the basis of seniority, with integrity and merit being given consideration.

The Collegium recommended him as a “He is a competent judge with a sound knowledge of law and possesses impeccable integrity,”. He has upheld the standards expected of a person in a high judicial position in his conduct as a judge.

After the Collegium’s recommendation, Justice Anjaria expressed profound gratitude, stating, “It is indeed a privilege and an honor to be entrusted with the responsibility of Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. I am committed to upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and equality, and endeavor to serve with utmost diligence and integrity.”

The Collegium stated that it had considered the fact that, of the Chief Justices of the High Courts, Justice Ashish J. Desai, whose parent High court is the Gujarat High Court, is currently serving as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court but is scheduled to step down on July 4. This information was taken into account when recommending Justice Anjaria’s name.
