NEW DELHI: Today(on 27th April), The Supreme Court of India has ruled in favor of the state’s plea for drought relief, obtaining a significant sum of Rs.3,498.82 crore from the Union Government. This landmark decision signifies the first time in the nation’s history that a state has been compelled to seek recourse from the highest court to uphold its rights.
Expressing his gratitude, the state’s representative stated-
“I extend my thanks to the Honorable Supreme Court. This occurrence represents a unique instance in India’s history where a state felt compelled to seek the enforcement of its rights through the highest judicial authority.”
The long wait for a response, which began in September 2023, has been regrettable. However, the persistence of the state’s efforts coupled with the intervention of the Supreme Court has finally yielded results.
The tardy response from the Union Government was alarming, yet it seems that substantial measures were taken after the Honorable Supreme Court intervened decisively.

The state official commented-
“After the intervention of the Honorable Supreme Court, @HMOIndia finally became proactive,”
The granting of drought relief brings a glimmer of hope for the farmers who have been struggling amidst harsh conditions. While some justice has been served, there is a sense of disappointment regarding the allocated funds. The state had initially requested Rs 18,000 crores, but the sanctioned amount of 3498.98 crores falls significantly short of their expectations.
“We requested Rs 18,000 crores, but only received 3498.98 crores! The granted amount is significantly insufficient,”
-expressed the concerned representative.
This sentiment echoes the sentiments of the farming community who were anticipating a more substantial financial support to help them recover from the devastating effects of the drought.
Despite the disappointment, the secured funds will undoubtedly provide some relief to the affected regions. The state government now faces the challenge of efficiently distributing the allocated amount to ensure that it reaches those in urgent need. Proper utilization of the funds becomes crucial in addressing the immediate requirements of the farmers, such as access to water, seeds, fertilizers, and other essential resources.
The Supreme Court’s ruling not only addresses the immediate crisis but also sets a precedent for other states in similar situations. It establishes the importance of timely and adequate relief measures during times of drought and emphasizes the need for proactive government action in safeguarding the interests of the farming community.
