CJI Surya Kant vows to prioritize justice for the poorest litigants, stating, “I am here for the smallest…poorest litigant in the last row.” He makes it clear that luxury litigation has no place in his court.

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Friday emphasized that ensuring justice for poor and underprivileged litigants is his top priority. He stated that he is willing to sit in court until midnight to address the concerns of those who cannot afford expensive legal battles.

The remarks were made by CJI Surya Kant while hearing a plea filed by Tilak Singh Dangi against the Centre and others. The case was dismissed by the CJI, who was sitting alongside Justice Joymalya Bagchi.

“No luxury litigation in my court,”

the CJI said, underlining that cases driven by wealthy litigants often seek unnecessary or prolonged legal proceedings. He stressed that his focus is entirely on those who need the system the most.

“Let me tell you this… I am here for the smallest… poorest litigant in the last row. If needed, I will sit here till midnight for them,”

he added, making it clear that providing access to justice for all, especially the economically weaker sections, is central to his judicial vision.

CJI Surya Kant took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24. Coming from a middle-class family in Hisar district, Haryana, he brings with him a deep understanding of the challenges faced by ordinary citizens in accessing justice.

He will serve as the Chief Justice for nearly 15 months and is set to retire on February 9, 2027, upon attaining the age of 65.

His remarks highlight a commitment to ensuring that the Indian judiciary remains accessible and responsive to all citizens, particularly those who often struggle to have their voices heard due to financial constraints.

By emphasizing that he will personally prioritize cases of the poorest litigants, CJI Surya Kant sends a strong message about the importance of equity, fairness, and timely justice in the judicial system.
