New Delhi: On May 17, Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai, who recently took over as the 52nd Chief Justice on May 14, 2025, has assured the nation that he will stay fully committed to protecting the Constitution and ensuring justice for all.

Speaking at a felicitation event organized by the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Saturday, CJI Gavai said that he would give his best during his term, even though it may be short.

In his speech at the event, the Chief Justice made it very clear that he understands the responsibility of the post and will always act in accordance with the Constitution.

He said,

“The only thing I can say is that whatever short period that I have, I will do my best to stand by my oath to uphold the rule of law, to uphold the Constitution of India.”

Justice Gavai highlighted how important it is to make sure that the promises made in the Constitution are not just for a few but are truly available to every person in the country, especially those who have not been heard for a long time.

He expressed his commitment to serve all sections of society equally and fairly through the legal system.

The event, which was held in New Delhi, witnessed the presence of several senior advocates, members of the judiciary, and other dignitaries from the legal fraternity, who came together to honour the newly appointed Chief Justice.

CJI Gavai’s message reflects his deep respect for constitutional values and the Indian legal system. His assurance to uphold the rule of law comes at a time when public trust in institutions is crucial.

By saying,

“The only thing I can say is that whatever short period that I have, I will do my best to stand by my oath to uphold the rule of law, to uphold the Constitution of India,”

he sent a clear message that his focus will remain on justice, equality, and fairness throughout his term.

Justice Gavai’s statement also sets a strong tone for his leadership in the Supreme Court, underlining that he intends to protect democratic values and work towards a more inclusive justice system.
