This special session will mark the conclusion of Justice Chandrachud’s tenure as the 50th Chief Justice of India, celebrated for his transformative approach to the judiciary and his dedication to advancing judicial transparency, inclusivity, and technological modernization.
Members of the Ceremonial Bench
Joining CJI Chandrachud on this ceremonial bench will be CJI-designate Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who will succeed him, along with Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
Since taking office in November 2022, Justice Chandrachud has championed reforms that have had a profound impact on the judiciary. Known for his advocacy of judicial transparency and access, Justice Chandrachud emphasized the need for digital transformation and procedural reforms to make justice more accessible to citizens across India.
He implemented initiatives such as e-filing, digitized court records, and live-streaming of court proceedings, increasing transparency and reducing barriers for people to access court proceedings remotely.
Under his leadership, the Supreme Court has also made strides in social justice, ruling on several landmark cases addressing issues of fundamental rights, environmental protection, and the rights of marginalized communities. Justice Chandrachud’s approach combined a respect for constitutional values with a sensitivity to societal change, recognizing the evolving dynamics of justice in a modern democracy.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna as CJI-Designate
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, set to assume the role of CJI following Justice Chandrachud’s retirement, will bring his own distinct judicial philosophy and priorities to the office. Known for his integrity, deep understanding of constitutional principles, and commitment to upholding the rule of law, Justice Khanna is expected to continue the progressive path laid by his predecessor while addressing the unique challenges facing the judiciary today.
His tenure is anticipated to maintain the emphasis on judicial access and inclusivity, areas where Justice Chandrachud had made considerable advancements.
In landmark judgments, Justice Chandrachud ruled in favor of gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and the rights of workers, furthering the cause of social justice. His judgments reflect his belief in the judiciary’s role in safeguarding human rights, setting legal precedents that reinforce the fundamental rights of every citizen.
Justice Chandrachud was a strong proponent of integrating technology into the judiciary to improve efficiency and accessibility. He spearheaded the launch of a fully functional e-filing system, established virtual courtrooms, and expanded the National Judicial Data Grid, enabling real-time monitoring of case data across courts. These reforms have been instrumental in reducing delays, improving case management, and providing litigants and lawyers with digital access to case information.
The ceremonial bench is a longstanding tradition of the Supreme Court, providing an opportunity to honor retiring judges and reflect on their contributions. For CJI Chandrachud, this ceremonial bench serves as a moment of respect and recognition for his contributions to the judiciary and his enduring impact on India’s legal landscape.
The ceremony will include a gathering of Supreme Court judges, members of the Bar, senior advocates, and court staff, who will come together to celebrate Justice Chandrachud’s illustrious career.
As Justice Chandrachud retires, he leaves behind a legacy of progress and reform that has reshaped the Indian judiciary’s approach to justice. His focus on transparency, inclusivity, and the use of technology has set a new standard for judicial practice. His contributions are likely to influence judicial philosophy and practice for years to come, as his successors continue to build on the foundations he established.
Today’s ceremonial bench will not only honor a dedicated Chief Justice but also symbolize the enduring spirit of India’s judiciary, committed to serving the people and upholding the principles of justice, equality, and fairness.
