CJI DY Chandrachud Inaugurates Mitti Cafe at Supreme Court, Champions Inclusivity with Specially Abled Staff

In a groundbreaking initiative championing inclusivity and accessibility, Chief Justice of India Dr. DY Chandrachud inaugurated the Mitti Cafe’ at the Supreme Court premises, a unique establishment entirely managed by specially abled staff. The inauguration, marked by a poignant rendition of the National Anthem in sign language, signifies a major step towards integrating specially abled individuals into the mainstream.

During the ceremony, attended by numerous Supreme Court judges, CJI Chandrachud praised the Mitti Cafe team for their remarkable contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly highlighting their service of 6 million meals in such challenging times. He expressed his aspirations for the initiative’s success, stating,

“These cafe members served 6 million meals during COVID. All who are managing it are disabled. I hope all the lawyers support this initiative.”

The Chief Justice also shared insights into the scale of Mitti Cafe’s impact, revealing,

“Mitti Cafe has established 38 cafes across the country and had served six million meals during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

His statement,

“I hope you all support us in this venture. All who are managing it are disabled,” further emphasizes the significance of this initiative in promoting inclusivity.

Attorney General R Venkataramani also commended the initiative, recognizing it as a symbol of great compassion and a testament to the resilience and capabilities of the specially abled.

This initiative aligns with CJI Chandrachud’s broader efforts to enhance accessibility within the judicial system. He had previously called for a comprehensive Accessibility audit of the Supreme Court premises, aiming to make the justice system more accessible and to understand the challenges faced by specially abled individuals. His consistent advocacy for transforming courts into inclusive spaces for lawyers and litigants with disabilities, even during open court sessions, underscores his dedication to this cause.

The inauguration of Mitti Cafe at the Supreme Court is a significant milestone, symbolizing societal progress and the judiciary’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and compassionate environment.
