NEW DELHI: In a move toward strengthening technology adoption in India’s judicial system, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has reconstituted the Supreme Court’s Artificial Intelligence Committee. The revamped committee will lead the adoption, development, and responsible deployment of artificial intelligence tools across the Supreme Court and subordinate courts.
According to an official statement issued by the apex court,
“The reconstituted AI Committee will continue to guide and oversee initiatives relating to the adoption, development and deployment of artificial intelligence tools and systems in the Supreme Court of India and the subordinate judiciary, with a view to enhancing efficiency, accessibility and transparency in the justice delivery system.”

According to the apex court, the committee will play a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency, accessibility, and transparency within the justice delivery system.
The reconstituted AI Committee will be headed by Justice P. S. Narasimha of the Supreme Court. The panel consists of senior judges and chief justices from various High Courts who bring extensive judicial and technological understanding to the table.
Committee Members:
- Justice P. S. Narasimha, Supreme Court of India – Chairperson
- Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice, Madhya Pradesh High Court
- Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan V., Judge, Kerala High Court
- Justice Anoop Chitkara, Judge, Punjab & Haryana High Court
- Justice Suraj Govindaraj, Judge, Karnataka High Court
Administrative Roles:
- Anupam Patra, Registrar (Technology) of the Supreme Court, will serve as the Member-Secretary and Convenor of the committee.
- Ashish J. Shiradhonkar, Member (Systems) of the Supreme Court’s e-Committee, has been appointed as a Special Invitee.
Their inclusion strengthens the committee’s technical expertise and ensures smooth coordination of AI-driven judicial initiatives.
Vision of the AI Committee
The AI Committee has been entrusted with a wide-ranging mandate aimed at transforming the justice delivery system through responsible and efficient use of technology.
1. Advancing AI Adoption in Courts
The committee will explore and implement AI-driven tools to streamline legal processes, support judges in research, and reduce overall case handling time.
2. Ensuring Ethical and Responsible AI Use
With growing concerns around privacy and algorithmic fairness, the committee will develop robust frameworks to ensure that AI usage in the judiciary “upholds transparency, accountability, and constitutional values.”
3. Enhancing Public Access to Justice
The Supreme Court emphasized the goal of using technology to improve litigants’ accessibility. This includes user-friendly digital interfaces, real-time updates, and multilingual AI tools.

4. Strengthening Transparency
By overseeing AI systems that assist with case listing, tracking, and management, the committee aims to increase transparency in judicial processes.
