Two Senior Supreme Court Judges Visit Kenya to Discuss Justice System and Technology

Justice Gavai and Justice Kant, who are both in line to become Chief Justice of India (CJI), will interact with Kenyan judges and legal experts. The event will focus on how courts can improve their functioning through modern technology.

NEW DELHI: Two senior judges of the Supreme Court of India, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant, have traveled to Kenya to discuss issues related to justice delivery with their counterparts. They will be attending a week-long judicial event from March 7 to March 15 in Kenya.

The main topic of discussion will be “Justice delivery and the adoption of technology within the judicial system.”

Justice Gavai and Justice Kant, who are both in line to become Chief Justice of India (CJI), will interact with Kenyan judges and legal experts. The event will focus on how courts can improve their functioning through modern technology.

Justice BR Gavai will take part in a discussion on possible ways of collaboration between the two Supreme Courts. He will also contribute to an interaction on “leveraging on technology within the judiciary.”

Justice Surya Kant will discuss “optimising service delivery in the judiciary and best practices, challenges and innovative solutions.”

Apart from these discussions, both judges will also visit the University of Nairobi law school, where they will deliver speeches to students and legal professionals.

Martha K Koome, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, will also be part of these judicial interactions. Interestingly, she was the first woman Chief Justice of Kenya.

During her visit to India in 2023, she attended a Supreme Court hearing and sat with a five-judge Constitution bench. She also met President Droupadi Murmu and participated in various legal events in India.

Justice BR Gavai is next in line to become the Chief Justice of India. Besides being one of the seniormost judges, he is also the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority.

Justice Surya Kant, who will succeed Justice Gavai as CJI, is the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee and the Chief Patron of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association.
