The Supreme Court granted permission for a Christian prayer meeting to proceed as planned in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Supreme Court set aside earlier orders from the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the district administration that had raised concerns about potential law and order issues related to the event.

NEW DELHI: Today (10th April): The Supreme Court of India intervened in a dispute regarding the holding of a Christian community prayer event in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

The bench led by Justices BR Gavai, Satish Chandra Sharma, and Sandeep Mehta reviewed the case. The Supreme Court set aside the decisions of both the High Court and the district administration, allowing the Christian community prayer event to proceed as scheduled.

“The court acknowledges that while the petitioner’s intention to convene the meeting may indeed be purely religious, the concerns raised by the respondents cannot be dismissed as unfounded.”

A Chennai-based Christian preacher, Dr. Paul Dhinakaran, addressed around 8,000 attendees at the event. However, the Indore administration, citing opposition from Hindu organizations and other social groups, canceled the permission for the prayer meeting.

The petitioner in this case, Suresh Carletons, who is the administrator of Christian Hospital Indore and also the chairperson of the prayer meet’s organizing committee, appealed against the last-minute cancellation by the district administration. Senior Counsel Santosh Paul and a team of advocates represented the petitioner in court.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed the plea, acknowledging the religious nature of the event but also considering the concerns raised by the administration and law enforcement regarding potential disruptions.
