"Delays in Hearings & Postponements Causing Widespread Disappointment"| BJP MP Mahato Writes to CJI, Urges Expedited Trial in R G Kar Rape and Murder Case

KOLKATA: Today(5th September), BJP MP from West Bengal, Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, has penned a letter to the Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud, urging the Supreme Court to hasten the trial in the horrifying case of the rape and murder of a young postgraduate trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. The crime, which occurred on August 9, has sent shockwaves across the nation, prompting widespread outrage and demands for speedy justice.

In his letter addressed to the CJI, Mahato expressed deep gratitude to the Supreme Court for taking notice of the heinous crime.

He wrote-

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Hon’ble Supreme Court for suo motu cognisance of the tragic rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. However, I respectfully request that the case proceedings be expedited, as the delays and postponements are causing significant disappointment and frustration among the people of West Bengal and across the nation.”

Beyond requesting an expedited trial, Mahato’s letter strongly condemned the role of the Kolkata Police, particularly naming Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Vineet Kumar Goyal, and other police officials for their alleged involvement in obstructing the investigation process. Mahato accused these officials of tampering with crucial evidence related to the case and mishandling various procedural matters.

In his plea, he expressed-

“Mishandling of evidence, hasty procedural actions, and a general lack of transparency have all fueled a growing sense of injustice.”

He urged the Supreme Court to take decisive action, saying-

“The Kolkata Police’s handling of this case has been deeply troubling… Commissioner of Police, Mr. Vineet Kumar Goyal, is at the heart of this controversy… His involvement has discredited not just the police force but also the justice system in West Bengal.”

Further elaborating, Mahato stressed-

“Given these concerns, I respectfully urge the Hon’ble Supreme Court to hold the implicated police officials, including the Commissioner of Police, and others responsible for tampering with evidence and obstructing justice accountable for their actions.”

The tragic incident that Mahato refers to occurred on August 9, when the lifeless body of a trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College. The gruesome nature of the crime sparked protests across the country, with citizens demanding justice for the victim and stronger measures to protect women.

In the immediate aftermath of the crime, a civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the incident. The arrest brought little solace to the public, given the enormity of the crime. Following this, the CBI took over the investigation and arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in a separate case involving financial misconduct at the medical institution.

In response to the public outrage and the heinous nature of the crime, the West Bengal Assembly moved swiftly to pass a significant piece of legislation. On Tuesday, they unanimously passed the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024’. The new bill is designed to tackle crimes against women and children more effectively, with provisions that include harsher punishments for offenders. One of the critical aspects of this bill is its requirement for the swift conclusion of investigations in rape cases, mandating that probes must be completed within 24 days of the initial report.
