Arvind Kejriwal Faces CBI Heat Ahead of Crucial Hearing in SC Today

NEW DELHI: Security measures have been significantly intensified at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court in anticipation of the appearance of Arvind Kejriwal, the incarcerated Chief Minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to present him before the court concerning allegations tied to a contentious liquor policy case. Concurrently, the Supreme Court is slated to deliberate on Kejriwal’s petition challenging a prior decision by the Delhi High Court that temporarily suspended his bail, initially approved by a subordinate court.

The situation surrounding Kejriwal has garnered extensive attention, with developments unfolding rapidly. On Monday, CBI officials conducted an interrogation with the Delhi Chief Minister within the confines of Tihar Jail, where he is also detained in connection to a case managed by the Enforcement Directorate. During this session, Kejriwal’s statement was formally recorded as part of the ongoing investigation into the liquor policy scandal.

Following the interrogation, the CBI took procedural steps to ensure Kejriwal’s appearance in court.

“The CBI filed an application before a special court requesting a production warrant for Arvind Kejriwal, which the court subsequently issued.”

– disclosed a source close to the matter.

The CBI will present the Delhi Chief Minister before a trial court at 10 am today, likely ahead of the Supreme Court hearing.

The intricacies of Kejriwal’s legal challenges are complex. Being already under judicial custody due to the Enforcement Directorate’s case, his legal situation is precarious. The CBI’s potential arrest and request for custody could further complicate matters.

A source elaborated on the implications, stating-

“If the CBI arrests him and obtains his custody, the Delhi Chief Minister won’t be able to leave jail today even if the Supreme Court overturns the Delhi High Court’s suspension of his bail.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is embroiled in a contentious legal battle. After being granted bail by a Delhi court on June 20, following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21, new complications have emerged. The court ordered his release on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh, but this decision was speedy contested.

The Enforcement Directorate took no time to challenge the bail granted to Kejriwal, moving the case to the Delhi High Court. The High Court responded by pausing the bail and reserving its final order until June 25. This development prompted Kejriwal’s legal team to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the High Court’s pause on the bail. Despite their efforts, the Supreme Court held back from making an immediate decision, advising Kejriwal to await the High Court’s ruling.

Further complications arose when, on Tuesday, the Delhi High Court issued its verdict. The Court pointed out that the trial court had failed to specify the conditions for Kejriwal’s release under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the legislation under which the Chief Minister was charged. This omission has added another layer of complexity to Kejriwal’s legal troubles.

Amid these legal proceedings, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has voiced strong objections, accusing the central government of underhanded tactics against their leader. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh articulated the party’s stance, claiming a sinister plot against the Chief Minister.

“Amid a strong likelihood of Arvind Kejriwal securing bail from the Supreme Court, sources indicate a purported plan by the Centre to fabricate a CBI case against the Delhi CM and effect his arrest. This development has garnered nationwide attention and widespread support for Arvind Kejriwal.”

– he stated emphatically.
