NEW DELHI: Today (March 18th): During the hearing concerning the Electoral Bond case, a heated verbal exchange between Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and advocate Mathews Nedumpara, creating waves on social media. Nedumpara contended that the entire judgment in the Electoral Bond case had been rendered without citizens’ knowledge, persistently talking over the judges despite their attempts to express disagreement.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud intervened, asking Nedumpara not to raise his voice and urging him to file a formal application if needed.
He emphatically stated, “DON’T SHOUT AT ME! If you want to move an application, file an application. WE ARE NOT HEARING YOU.”
Even after this, Nedumpara continued to speak, and leading Justice Gavai warned him about a potential contempt notice.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court displayed a stern approach towards the State Bank of India (SBI) regarding the electoral bond case, questioning the bank’s reluctance to provide information about electoral bonds.
The court instructed SBI to furnish the bond numbers and ordered the submission of an affidavit by Thursday evening, confirming the absence of any remaining information. Justice Sanjiv Khanna highlighted the importance of resolving pertinent issues following the court’s directives.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan raised concerns about the non-disclosure of donor names to political parties, to which Justice Gavai responded that “it was not under review at the moment.”.
Justice Chandrachud emphasized the court’s directive to disclose information regarding the electoral bond scheme for a comprehensive resolution. The court directed SBI to disclose all pertinent details, including purchase/redemption dates, purchaser/recipient names, and denominations, signifying a significant step in transparency.
