Akhilesh Yadav, during a Lok Sabha debate, criticized the BJP for promoting division and undermining peace, referring to recent violence in Uttar Pradesh over mosque surveys. He accused the party of voter suppression in elections, emphasized the Constitution’s importance in unity, and raised concerns over minoritization and national security, advocating for a caste census to address inequalities.

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, speaking during a Constitution debate in the Lok Sabha on Friday, criticized the BJP for fostering division and undermining peace. “Those looking for temples under mosques don’t want peace,” Yadav declared, referring to the Supreme Court’s recent pause on surveys of places of worship, including mosques. He also cited last month’s violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, where tensions over a mosque survey led to the deaths of several people.
The Kannauj MP accused the BJP of disrespecting Indian voters, alleging voter suppression during the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. “Voters in Uttar Pradesh were not allowed to vote in the Lok Sabha elections,” he said, claiming police interventions prevented citizens from exercising their democratic rights.

Highlighting the Constitution’s role in securing and uniting India, Yadav emphasized its importance as the soul of democracy. However, he raised concerns over critical national issues, including border security, economic stability, and the safety of citizens. Referring to alleged Chinese transgressions, Yadav said, “India’s borders are shrinking,” expressing doubts about the government’s ability to safeguard territorial integrity.
Yadav also criticized attempts to marginalize the country’s 20 crore minorities, particularly Muslims. He accused the ruling party of working to make minorities “second-class citizens” and emphasized the need for inclusivity.
“Caste census will bridge the gap among castes. Whenever we get the opportunity, we will conduct a caste census,” he asserted, underscoring the importance of data-driven policies to address social inequalities.

This debate comes amid heightened tensions following the Supreme Court’s intervention in contentious surveys of religious sites. Yadav’s comments reflect growing political discourse on protecting constitutional values and ensuring harmony in India’s diverse society.
The Samajwadi Party leader’s remarks have sparked conversations about the role of the Constitution in addressing modern challenges, with a focus on voter rights, minority welfare, and national security. Yadav’s strong stand against divisive politics underscores the need for unity and respect for democratic principles in the current political landscape.
