He previously encouraged citizens with pending Supreme Court cases to participate in the Lok Adalat for amicable and swift resolutions.
In a video message on the Supreme Court’s website, Chief Justice Chandrachud said,
“From the 29th of July to the third of August 2024, the Supreme Court is organising a special Lok Adalat. This is part of a series of activities, which the Supreme Court is observing to commemorate the 75th year since the establishment of the Supreme Court.”
Highlighting the concern over the extensive backlog of cases, he emphasized the importance of Lok Adalats as an informal, technology-driven method to resolve disputes voluntarily and consensually.
He added,
“Therefore, on behalf of all my colleagues, and the staff of the Supreme Court, I would appeal to all citizens who have cases before the Supreme Court, or lawyers, advocates on record, to take the advantage and benefit of this opportunity in an attempt to resolve the cases speedily in a manner which is acceptable to every contesting party,”
The Supreme Court recognized Lok Adalats as a vital part of the nation’s judicial system, promoting alternative dispute resolution to expedite and encourage amicable settlements.

Lok Adalats provide a straightforward method for resolving cases through mutual agreement among all parties involved. The Supreme Court registry prepared a list of 2,200 cases to be addressed over five days starting on July 29. Seven courts will be exclusively assigned to this special Lok Adalat.
It stated that cases with settlement potential, such as those involving matrimonial issues, property conflicts, motor accident claims, land acquisition, compensation, and service and labour disputes pending before the apex court, would be addressed to facilitate prompt resolution.
To reduce the backlog of cases, the Supreme Court announced it will hold a special Lok Adalat from July 29 to August 3, aimed at facilitating the amicable settlement of appropriate pending cases.
