Western Railway Official Sentenced to Three Years for Bribery in Mumbai

A Mumbai court has delivered a stern verdict against a Western Railway official involved in a bribery case. Kishamlal Meena, aged 47 and serving as the divisional electrical engineer (power) for Western Railway, has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment. This judgment comes as a result of Meena’s illicit demand for a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from a contractor engaged in the maintenance and repair of air-conditioning plants.

The case, which has caught the attention of anti-corruption advocates and the public alike, was initiated by Sarvesh Pandey, the son of Sureshmani Pandey. The latter is the proprietor of GHS Cool Service, a firm specializing in the repairs and maintenance of AC plants. The prosecution detailed how Meena sought an illegal gratification of Rs 3 lakh to favor GHS Cool Service in the awarding of two railway contracts. Furthermore, Meena indicated that the firm would be shortlisted for a third contract, promising substantial financial gains.

According to the details provided by the prosecution, the incident that led to the legal proceedings occurred on April 8, 2015. Sarvesh Pandey approached Meena to inquire about the status of the contracts. During this meeting, Meena outlined that the combined value of the three contracts would amount to Rs 80 lakh, from which GHS Cool Service could expect a profit margin of Rs 20 lakh over two years. It was on this basis that Meena demanded the bribe, setting the stage for the subsequent legal battle.

The court’s decision to impose a three-year sentence of rigorous imprisonment on Meena underscores the judiciary’s intolerance for corruption and its commitment to upholding integrity within public services. The judge, in delivering the verdict, explicitly dismissed the defense’s submissions, indicating a clear stance against the corrupt practices alleged in this case.

This judgment not only serves as a punitive measure against the convicted official but also acts as a deterrent to potential corrupt practices within the railway sector and other public services. The case highlights the crucial role of vigilance and legal recourse in combating corruption, ensuring that public officials are held accountable for their actions. As the news of this judgment spreads, it reinforces the message that integrity and transparency are non-negotiable standards within public administration, promising a more ethical and corruption-free environment for contractors and service providers working with government and public sector entities.
