Chennai : Former Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji, a senior DMK leader, his remand extended by a sessions court on Wednesday until June 25.

Balaji arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on June 14, 2023, in connection with a money laundering case.

On Wednesday, Senthil Balaji produced before Principal Sessions Judge S Alli through video-conferencing from the Central Puzhal Prison.

Judge Alli extended Balaji’s judicial custody until June 25.

Earlier, on June 14, Judge Alli stated that she would pass orders on Wednesday regarding a petition filed by Senthil Balaji, seeking to be discharged from the case. She had also dismissed three other petitions submitted by Balaji.

On Wednesday, when the case came up for hearing, Senthil Balaji filed three more petitions before Principal Sessions Judge S Alli. The judge then directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to submit its counter affidavits to these three new petitions.

In one of the petitions, Balaji sought to defer the current proceedings and postpone the case to a later date. In the other two petitions, he requested to be provided with the missing documents copies of counterfoil challans relating to his account which were collected by the ED during its investigation and labelled as “Relied Upon Document Nos-16 and 17“.

It should be noted that Senthil Balaji arrested on June 14 by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to a cash-for-jobs scam when he was the Transport Minister under a previous AIADMK government. The case revolves around a cash-for-jobs scam, indicating potential misuse of his official capacity for personal financial gain through corrupt means.

The ED filed a 3,000-page charge sheet against Balaji on August 12 last year..

The legal proceedings involving Senthil Balaji highlights a larger problem of corruption within governmental positions, specifically concerning job appointments in the state’s transportation sector. Termed as the cash-for-jobs scam, it reportedly entails monetary transactions for securing job positions, indicating a grave offense that suggests deep-rooted systemic corruption.
