The controversy began in September 2023 when Udhayanidhi Stalin made a statement during a conference in Chennai. He remarked that Sanatana Dharma was opposed to social justice and equality and likened it to diseases that need to be eradicated.
“Sanatana Dharma opposes social justice and equality. It should be eliminated akin to tackling malaria and dengue.”
– he said.
His statement ignited widespread condemnation across various segments of society, triggering significant backlash. Critics contended that his remarks were inflammatory and showed disrespect towards followers of Sanatana Dharma.
The legal proceedings against Udayanidhi Stalin began after social activist Paramesh filed a petition, prompting the court to issue a notice to the minister. On Tuesday, Stalin appeared before the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, where he was granted bail with a surety amounting to Rs one lakh.
The court’s decision to grant bail has been met with varied reactions. Supporters of Stalin argue that his remarks were taken out of context and that he was merely advocating for social justice and equality. On the other hand, opponents maintain that his words were provocative and harmful to social harmony.
Despite being granted bail, the case will proceed, and the next hearing is scheduled for August 8th.
