Sushant Singh Rajput Death Case | "No One Responsible for Suicide": CBI Ends Probe After 4 Years

MUMBAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) finally completed its long and detailed investigation into the death of famous Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, more than four years after the case was handed over to them.

According to sources, the CBI has filed a closure report in the matter, officially ending the probe.

What Happened in June 2020?

Sushant Singh Rajput, who was only 34 years old, was found hanging in his apartment in Bandra, Mumbai on June 14, 2020. His sudden death shocked not only Bollywood but also his millions of fans all over India and abroad.

Soon after his death, many rumours and theories started spreading. Some even linked the case to black magic, conspiracy, and foul play.

These shocking and confusing rumours led to strong public demand for a proper and fair investigation.

Why CBI Got Involved?

After Sushant’s death, his father KK Singh filed a police complaint in Patna, Bihar. In that complaint, he accused Sushant’s then-girlfriend and actor Rhea Chakraborty of mentally harassing him, giving him wrong medicines, using his money, and playing a role in his death.

Based on that complaint, the Bihar Police registered a case of abetment to suicide.

Soon, the CBI took over the case from Bihar Police in August 2020 and started a full investigation.

What Did CBI Find in Four Years?

As per CBI sources, after investigating the case for over four years, the agency found no evidence to prove that any person was responsible for Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide. They said Rhea Chakraborty and her family have been given a clean chit and no one named in the FIRs is found guilty.

This includes Rhea, her parents, and her brother. All of them have been absolved of all allegations made in the two FIRs filed in the case – one by Sushant’s father against Rhea, and the second one by Rhea against Sushant’s family.

Even a forensic team from AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) had earlier confirmed that Sushant’s death was not murder, but a clear case of suicide.

What Did Forensic Teams Do?

When the CBI started the investigation, they asked the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to do a deep scientific examination of the crime scene. As part of this process, officials collected several electronic devices from Sushant’s flat including his laptop, two mobile phones, a Canon camera, and hard disks. All these were forensically examined to look for any clues.

During the investigation, over 20 people were questioned, including Rhea Chakraborty.

Now that the CBI has submitted the closure report, the matter will come up for hearing in Bandra Magistrate Court on April 8. If the court accepts the closure report, the case will be officially closed.

Rhea Chakraborty’s Lawyer Speaks

After the CBI submitted the closure report, Rhea Chakraborty’s lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, released a strong statement. He said that both he and Rhea are thankful to the CBI for properly investigating the case. However, he also criticized how the case was handled in public.

“Due to the pandemic everyone was glued to the TV & social media in the absence of anything happening in the country. Innocent people were hounded and paraded before the media and investigative authorities. I hope this does not repeat in any case… Rhea Chakraborty had to undergo untold miseries and was behind bars for 27 days for no fault of hers until Justice Sarang V Kotwal released her on bail,”

-he said.

“I salute her and her family for having kept silent and yet suffered the inhuman treatment they were meted (sic)… Both Rhea’s family and my team and I were hounded and threatened… Today I can share that I’m proud to have defended a fauji (Army) family pro bono… This country is still very safe and every citizen crying for justice has hope due to our vibrant judiciary,”

-the lawyer added.

Supreme Court on CBI’s Lookout Circular

In another important development from October last year, the Supreme Court of India had cancelled the CBI’s lookout circular that was issued against Rhea Chakraborty and her family members after Sushant’s death.

The Supreme Court called the CBI’s appeal “frivolous”. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan noted that the appeal seemed unnecessary and was perhaps filed only because the accused were well-known people from the film industry.

“We are warning you. You are filing such a frivolous petition, only because one of the accused is a high-profile person. It will be dismissed with exemplary cost. Both persons have deep roots in society,”

-Justice Gavai had said.

In 2020, the CBI had issued lookout circulars (which stops someone from leaving the country) against Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, her mother Sandhya, and her father Lt Colonel Indrajit Chakraborty (retired). Now, those circulars have been cancelled.
