"Untraceable Few Weeks Ago, Sheena Bora's Remains Found at Our Office in Delhi": CBI in Court

Mumbai: The few human bones that were alleged to have suddenly gone missing from the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) storeroom or malkhana in Mumbai, where evidence related to the 2015 Sheena Bora murder case was kept, have now reappeared.

On Wednesday, the CBI informed the special CBI court that they have located the bones they had previously reported as untraceable. This revelation came while forensic expert Dr. Zeba Khan was in the witness box. Last month, Public Prosecutor CJ Nandode had stated that the bones were not traceable.

As the Sheena Bora murder trial resumed on Wednesday, Dr. Khan was present in court. However, before she could be questioned, Special CBI judge SP Naik Nimbalkar brought up an email and a hard copy received from a person claiming to be Khan’s brother.

The email alleged that Dr. Khan had purchased properties abroad and accumulated a large bank balance, implying that she was colluding with the accused. The complaint suggested that Dr. Khan and the accused might be responsible for the evidence going missing.

Considering the seriousness of these allegations, the judge believed they warranted investigation. Advocates Ranjeet Sangle (representing Indrani Mukerjea), Manjula Rao (representing Peter Mukerjea), and Shreyansh Mithare (representing Sanjeev Khanna) agreed and called for an investigation before proceeding further.

Nandode requested time to seek instructions and later returned to court, stating that the bones were found in the malkhana but that the CBI no longer wished to rely on this evidence. He emphasized that Dr. Khan’s cross-examination should continue despite this.

The defense lawyers requested that the bones be produced in court. However, the judge deemed it unnecessary since the CBI was not relying on them. The court proceeded with Dr. Khan’s cross-examination, which concluded by the end of the day. Nonetheless, Sangle and Rao reiterated their demand for an investigation into the complaint’s allegations, citing their relevance to the accused.

Judge Naik Nimbalkar indicated that a formal order regarding the issue would be issued on Thursday.

The CBI alleges that Sheena Bora was strangled by her mother, Indrani Mukerjea, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna, and their driver Shyamwar Rai in 2012.

The body was then allegedly transported to Pen village and burned. Peter Mukerjea is accused of being part of the conspiracy. The skeletal remains recovered by Pen police in 2012 were sent to JJ Hospital for examination.

The case remained unsolved until 2015, when Rai’s arrest led to the revelation of the alleged murder. Rai later turned approver in the case.
