The 23-year-old victim died of organ failure days after consuming a poisoned Ayurvedic tonic. Greeshma’s uncle received three years in prison, while her mother was acquitted. The case, which sparked public outrage, highlighted a tragic tale of betrayal and conspiracy.

Sharon, a resident of Thiruvananthapuram, was in a romantic relationship with Greeshma. Along with the death sentence, the court also sentenced her to ten years in prison for abduction and five years for misleading the investigation.
The sentencing was detailed by Judge AM Basheer of Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court.
Her uncle, Nirmal Kumar, received a three-year jail term, while her mother was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. The verdict was delivered by Judge AM Basheer of Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court on January 17.
The court found Greeshma guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 364 (abduction with intent to murder), Section 328 (causing harm using poison), Section 302 (murder), and Section 201 (destruction of evidence). Her uncle was also convicted under Section 201 (destruction of evidence).
Sharon Raj, a final-year BSc Radiology student, and Greeshma, a literature student, met during their college days in Kanyakumari. They were in a relationship for over a year, but tensions reportedly arose when Greeshma’s family arranged her marriage to another man.
According to the prosecution, Greeshma planned to end the relationship and conspired with her uncle and mother to kill Sharon. On October 14, 2022, Sharon visited Greeshma at her home in Kanyakumari, where she allegedly gave him an Ayurvedic tonic mixed with poison.

Sharon’s health began deteriorating soon after consuming the tonic. He succumbed to multiple organ failure on October 25, 2022. It was alleged that Greeshma, along with her uncle and mother, hid the poison bottle to destroy evidence.
The murder shocked the public, and the case was handed over to a special investigation team led by DySP Johnson. Greeshma was arrested on October 31, 2022, along with her mother and uncle.
The prosecution charged Greeshma with murder, abduction, and destroying evidence. Greeshma was in custody for nearly a year before being granted bail by the Kerala High Court on September 25, 2023, under strict conditions. Despite the bail, she continued to face trial.
BACKGROUND
A Kerala court on Jan 17 found Greeshma guilty of killing her boyfriend, 23-year-old Sharon Raj, from Thiruvananthapuram. The verdict was delivered on Friday by the Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court.
The court declared Greeshma guilty under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 364 (kidnapping or abducting to murder), 328 (causing hurt by poison), 302 (punishment for murder), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence). Meanwhile, her uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, was also found guilty under Section 201 for hiding evidence, but her mother was acquitted due to lack of proof.

Sharon Raj, a final-year BSc Radiology student, had been in a romantic relationship with Greeshma, a literature student, for over a year. The prosecution claimed that after poisoning Sharon, Greeshma, her mother, and her uncle hid the bottle containing the poison to destroy evidence. Sharon’s health worsened rapidly after the incident, and on October 25, 2022, he tragically passed away from multiple organ failure.
The case drew significant public attention and led to a detailed investigation by a special Crime Branch team headed by DySP Johnson. The investigation revealed the conspiracy and resulted in the arrests of Greeshma on October 31, 2022, followed by her mother and uncle.
The prosecution charged Greeshma with serious crimes, including murder, abduction with the intent to murder, and destroying evidence under various IPC sections.
“Greeshma spent nearly a year in custody until the Kerala High Court granted her bail on September 25, 2023, with strict conditions. However, she continued to face trial alongside her co-accused.”
This tragic case has not only shaken the community but also highlighted the grave consequences of such criminal actions.
The court’s sentencing is awaited on January 18, 2025, to provide closure to Sharon’s family and bring justice to the case.
