Sharon Raj Murder Case: Kerala Court Convicts Girlfriend Greeshma & Her Uncle, Mother Acquitted

Neyyattinkara: A Kerala court has found Greeshma guilty of killing her boyfriend, 23-year-old Sharon Raj, from Thiruvananthapuram. The verdict was delivered on Friday by the Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court.

The sentencing will be detailed by Judge AM Basheer on January 18.

The court declared Greeshma guilty under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 364 (kidnapping or abducting to murder), 328 (causing hurt by poison), 302 (punishment for murder), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence). Meanwhile, her uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, was also found guilty under Section 201 for hiding evidence, but her mother was acquitted due to lack of proof.

Sharon Raj, a final-year BSc Radiology student, had been in a romantic relationship with Greeshma, a literature student, for over a year. They met during their time at a private college in Kanyakumari. However, their relationship reportedly soured when Greeshma’s family arranged her marriage to another man.

The prosecution stated that Greeshma, wanting to end her relationship with Sharon, planned his murder with the help of her mother and uncle.

“On October 14, 2022, Sharon visited Greeshma at her house in Kanyakumari, where she allegedly gave him a kashayam (Ayurvedic tonic) mixed with poison.”

The prosecution claimed that after poisoning Sharon, Greeshma, her mother, and her uncle hid the bottle containing the poison to destroy evidence. Sharon’s health worsened rapidly after the incident, and on October 25, 2022, he tragically passed away from multiple organ failure.

The case drew significant public attention and led to a detailed investigation by a special Crime Branch team headed by DySP Johnson. The investigation revealed the conspiracy and resulted in the arrests of Greeshma on October 31, 2022, followed by her mother and uncle.

The prosecution charged Greeshma with serious crimes, including murder, abduction with the intent to murder, and destroying evidence under various IPC sections.

“Greeshma spent nearly a year in custody until the Kerala High Court granted her bail on September 25, 2023, with strict conditions. However, she continued to face trial alongside her co-accused.”

This tragic case has not only shaken the community but also highlighted the grave consequences of such criminal actions.

The court’s sentencing is awaited on January 18, 2025, to provide closure to Sharon’s family and bring justice to the case.
