In the Savarkar Defamation Case, Savarkar’s grandnephew Satyaki Savarkar appeared before a special court in Pune in connection with Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on V. D. Savarkar, marking the beginning of the trial in the long-pending defamation case.

Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of V. D. Savarkar, testified before a special court in the defamation case related to remarks made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about the Hindutva ideologue, marking the start of the trial.
Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, representing Satyaki Savarkar, mentioned that part of his client’s chief examination was recorded during the deposition.
Kolhatkar stated,
“In it, he spoke about his family background and how he came across an online link to Rahul Gandhi’s speech delivered in London in March 2023. In that speech, Gandhi claimed V. D. Savarkar had written in a book that he and five to six friends once beat up a Muslim man and had felt happy about it,”
During his testimony, Satyaki provided details about the video, including the date of Gandhi’s speech and the duration of the clip, according to Kolhatkar.
Advocate Milind Pawar, representing Gandhi, requested additional time to respond to an application submitted by Satyaki Savarkar.
The application asserted that “Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse; however, no social boycott was imposed on Godse’s family after the assassination.”
Pawar argued that a close examination of the application suggests that the complainant is indirectly justifying the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
He further noted that the content of the application is rooted in historical events, necessitating verification of those historical facts before a detailed response can be provided.
Pawar added,
“We requested the court to grant the defence sufficient time to study the relevant historical documents and file a comprehensive written statement. The court has granted time to submit a detailed reply, and the matter is now posted for November 7,”
