"I’m being Framed...": Kolkata Rape and Murder Case Suspect Sanjoy Roy Breaks Down in Court, Claims 'Innocence' – Court Orders Polygraph Test

KOLKATA: In the tragic rape and murder case of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the primary suspect, Sanjoy Roy, made an emotional appearance in a Kolkata court on Friday(23rd August). Roy, who has been in custody since his arrest on August 10 by the Kolkata Police, broke down during the hearing, asserting that he is “innocent.” His emotional plea marked a dramatic moment in the ongoing investigation that has gripped the city.

When questioned by the presiding judge about his willingness to undergo a polygraph test, Roy’s distress became apparent. He stated-

“I haven’t committed any crime. I’m being framed. Maybe this test will prove that.”

These words, reported by the Times of India, encapsulate the suspect’s continued insistence on his innocence despite the grave accusations against him.

The court proceedings saw Roy agreeing to undergo the polygraph test, a crucial step in the investigation. This test, often referred to as a lie-detector test, requires both the court’s authorization and the suspect’s consent. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is leading the probe into this horrific crime, had presented Roy before the court to seek permission for the test. The CBI also requested polygraph tests for other individuals linked to the case.

In response to the CBI’s request, the court granted permission for Roy’s polygraph test and ordered his continued detention, remanding him to 14 days of judicial custody. Reports from the courtroom describe Roy as visibly distressed during the proceedings, further emphasizing his claims of being wrongfully accused.

In addition to Sanjoy Roy, the court has also approved polygraph tests for several other individuals connected to the case. Among them is Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, along with five others. This group includes four doctors who had been with the victim on the night of the tragic incident, sharing a meal before the horrific crime occurred.

The brutal events unfolded on August 9 when the young trainee doctor was discovered raped and murdered in a seminar hall within the medical college. Authorities who arrived at the scene were met with a grim sight, as the victim’s body bore multiple lacerations and wounds, indicating the extreme violence she endured. The crime shocked the nation, triggering widespread public outcry and leading to large-scale protests across the medical community.

In response to this heinous crime, resident doctor associations throughout India initiated a nationwide strike, halting all elective services, including outpatient departments and non-emergency surgeries. This strike lasted for 11 days, bringing many medical services to a standstill. The protest only ended after the Supreme Court intervened, urging doctors to resume their duties, highlighting the critical impact the strike had on healthcare services.

The investigation into the crime progressed rapidly, leading to Sanjoy Roy’s arrest less than 24 hours after the discovery of the victim’s body. Investigators were able to link Roy to the crime scene through various pieces of evidence, including video footage that reportedly placed him at the location. Additionally, Roy’s Bluetooth headphones were found near the scene, further tying him to the incident. More alarming were the reports that explicit content was allegedly found on Roy’s mobile device, raising significant concerns about his involvement in the crime.
