Advocate Jagat Pal, representing the residents, stated that a detailed 25-page argument had been filed to support their plea. He noted, however, that the rejection of the application would not significantly affect the case.

Shimla: A court on Thursday ( Nov 14) dismissed an application by local residents seeking to join the Sanjauli mosque case as a party.

The application, submitted on November 11 in the court of the additional district judge, was part of proceedings addressing the maintainability of an appeal by the All Himachal Muslim Organisation (AHMO). The appeal challenges an October 5 municipal commissioner’s court order directing the demolition of three unauthorized floors of the five-storey Sanjauli mosque within two months.

Advocate Jagat Pal, representing the residents, stated that a detailed 25-page argument had been filed to support their plea. He noted, however, that the rejection of the application would not significantly affect the case.

On September 11, ten people were injured during a protest calling for the demolition of part of the mosque in Shimla’s Sanjauli area. The following day, Sanjauli mosque president Latif Mohammad, along with other members of the Muslim community, proposed to demolish the three unauthorized floors and requested the municipal commissioner’s permission to proceed.

The court approved the demolition, but this decision was subsequently challenged by the All Himachal Muslim Organisation (AHMO).

The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 18.
