Mumbai: Today(19th Jan): A court in Mumbai has given the city police five days of custody of Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national arrested for allegedly breaking into actor Saif Ali Khan‘s house. The incident took place late on Wednesday night, during which the accused reportedly injured the actor and his staff.

Shariful, who was living in Mumbai under the false name of Bijoy Das, was tracked down and arrested in Thane early on Thursday morning. According to the police, he entered India illegally a few months ago.

The burglary attempt turned violent, leaving the 54-year-old actor with six stab injuries, including one close to his spine. Police revealed that the knife used in the attack broke into three pieces during the scuffle. While one shard was recovered from Mr. Khan’s body, another piece is yet to be found.

Police informed the court that the accused had hidden the clothes he wore during the incident, which reportedly had bloodstains.

They stated, “The clothes need to be recovered so that blood samples could be matched.”

The public prosecutor argued that Shariful was aware of the heightened security in the Bandra locality where Saif Ali Khan resides with his family, as it is home to several celebrities. Despite this, the accused managed to break into the actor’s house.

Police emphasized, “The accused acted on a plan.”

Following his arrest, police uncovered that Shariful is a Bangladeshi national who entered India illegally. They are now investigating who helped him cross the border and aided him during his stay in Mumbai.

“We are investigating who helped him and aided him here,” police told the court. They also stated that they are probing Shariful’s acquaintances in Mumbai to gather more information.

The police requested 14 days of custody, arguing that the investigation is still ongoing and crucial evidence, including the missing knife shard and bloodstained clothes, needs to be recovered.

The lawyer representing the accused, Dinesh Prajapati, denied the allegations, saying that his client was being falsely implicated.

Prajapati told the court, “The allegations against him are false, and the matter is in focus because a celebrity has been targeted.”

Speaking to the media, he added, “We have said in his defence that nothing has been recovered from him. They have not produced any document to prove he is a Bangladeshi national.”

Shariful was produced in court hours after his arrest. While the court has granted five days of custody to the police, further details about his motives and accomplices are being investigated.
