The court emphasized the seriousness of the offense and the need for continued investigation. Mumbai Police suspect accomplices and have gathered evidence, including fingerprints linking Shehzad to the crime scene.
Mumbai: In a dramatic turn of events, the Bandra Magistrate Court on Friday extended the police custody of Mohd Shariful Islam Shehzad, the accused who allegedly stabbed Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence last week, until January 29. The court noted that substantial progress had been made in the case and further investigation into other critical aspects was essential.
“The offence is serious and triable by the sessions court,”
observed the court. It further added that continued custody was crucial to ascertain the accused’s innocence and the submissions related to the notice under BNSS Section 35 did not apply.
“Nothing from the records inferred that the arrest is illegal,”
the court stated.
The Mumbai Police sought further custody of the accused, suspecting the involvement of accomplices in the attack. They argued that the accused was uncooperative, especially in revealing the source of the weapon used in the crime.
“We are still to receive his shoes which he wore during the crime,”
police officials said, adding that a Gamchha used by the accused during the incident had been recovered.
Additionally, the police are working on matching the accused’s facial recognition with CCTV footage and plan to record the statement of Kolkata resident Khukmoni Jahangir Sheikh, whose Aadhaar card was allegedly used by the accused to procure a SIM card.
On Thursday, Mumbai Police recorded Saif Ali Khan’s statement at his Bandra residence, ‘Satguru Sharan.’ Joint CP of Law and Order, Satyanarayan Choudhary, confirmed the development and revealed that Kareena Kapoor’s statement had also been recorded earlier.
The accused allegedly entered Saif’s home with the intent to steal, leading to a violent confrontation that left the actor with stab wounds to his thoracic spine and other areas. Saif Ali Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital for immediate treatment and was discharged on Tuesday after surgery.
On Wednesday, police discovered multiple fingerprints belonging to the accused at Saif’s residence. These were found on the stairs, the door of the toilet, and the handle of the door to Jeh’s room. Officials believe these prints will play a pivotal role in strengthening the case.
Investigators revealed that the accused attempted to break into three other houses before entering Saif’s residence. The police are now focused on piecing together evidence and unearthing any connections to accomplices in the crime.
