A Delhi court has asked the Delhi Police to file a status report on a plea seeking registration of an FIR against Chief Minister Rekha Gupta over her remark comparing Delhi government officials to Hanuman, listing the matter for October 15.

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sought a status report from the Delhi Police on a plea seeking registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta over her remarks comparing government officials to Hanuman [Ram Niwas Sharma v. Rekha Gupta].
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Ashwani Panwar of the Rouse Avenue Court passed the order on October 3, 2026, and directed the police to file their report by October 15, when the matter will be heard next.
The plea
The plea has been filed by Ram Niwas Sharma, who seeks action against Rekha Gupta for remarks she made on September 23, 2025 during an official government programme marking the start of DTC bus services from Delhi to Baraut in Uttar Pradesh.
Sharma points out that the statement was made at a public forum, during an official programme, and was heard widely by officials, attendees and members of the public. On that basis, he contends that an FIR should be registered against her.
The remark
According to the plea, Rekha Gupta said at the programme that the officials of the Delhi Government are all like Hanuman, who remember their power only when their tails are set on fire and forget it until then, and that Hanuman came to her mind because the gathering was being held at the doorstep of Marghat Wale Baba. The plea quotes her as saying:
“Ye jo hamare Dilli sarkar ke adhikari hain ye sare Hanuman hain.”
The remark drew criticism from some quarters, which said it insulted Lord Hanuman and religious beliefs.
What the court has done
Hearing the plea on Saturday, the court did not decide whether an FIR should be registered. It called for the Delhi Police’s status report and fixed October 15 as the next date.
Why the order matters
The order is a preliminary step in which the court has called for the police’s position without examining the merits of the allegation. The remark, and the contention that it hurt religious sentiments, are yet to be tested, and the court has expressed no view on whether any offence is made out. What the police report says will be known when the matter is taken up again on October 15.
