Frustrated by the absence of the CBI’s investigating officer and prosecutor, the magistrate questioned, “Should I grant bail to Sanjay Roy?” This remark came during a hearing related to the RG Kar case. The court expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI’s handling of the proceedings, as key legal representatives were missing.

Kolkata: A Sealdah court reprimanded the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for failing to appear at the hearing of Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Expressing frustration over the absence of the CBI’s investigating officer and prosecutor, the magistrate remarked,

“Shall I grant bail to Sanjay Roy? This reflects a severely lethargic attitude on the part of the CBI. It is very unfortunate.”

Subsequently, a legal representative from the central investigation agency hastily sent to the hearing.

During the hearing, the court denied the bail application of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, who had been arrested on August 10. The court also ordered his remand to judicial custody for 14 days.

Roy will remain in custody until September 20 under the supervision of the CBI.

In the meantime, the CBI conducted a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy at Presidency Jail in August.

Additionally, the CBI registered a case related to alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, where the body of the female doctor was discovered on August 9. This case was originally investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the West Bengal government but later handed over to the CBI following a ruling by the Calcutta High Court.

The High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation came after a petition from former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College, Akhtar Ali, who alleged financial misconduct during the tenure of the college’s former principal, Ghosh.

Roy, aged 33, was a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police at the time of his arrest. The investigation took a significant turn when a Bluetooth device discovered near the victim’s body was traced back to Roy, leading to his immediate apprehension. Further damning evidence included CCTV footage that placed him on the third floor of the hospital, close to the location of the seminar hall where the crime occurred.

In addition to Sanjay Roy, the CBI also conducted polygraph tests on several other individuals connected to the case. According to a report, four people, including Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH), underwent polygraph tests at the CBI’s Kolkata office. The results from these tests are expected to aid the investigators in piecing together the events leading up to the doctor’s tragic death.

The CBI sought and received permission from a local court in Kolkata to subject a total of seven individuals, including Roy and the former principal, to the lie-detection test. While it is important to note that polygraph test results cannot be used as direct evidence in a court of law, they are instrumental in guiding the investigative process, helping the agency to focus its efforts in the right direction.
