[RG Kar Rape-Murder] "Not Cooperating With the CBI Officers": Court Extends Custody of Ex-Principal & Tala OC for 3 Days

KOLKATA: In the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case, a Kolkata court on Tuesday(17th Sept), extended the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the ex-principal of RG Kar Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, by three more days. The extension was granted as CBI officials argued in court that the accused were not cooperating with the investigation, which necessitated the further extension of their custody.

The CBI informed the court that both Dr. Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal were “not cooperating with the CBI officers,” which was hampering the progress of the investigation. The investigative agency highlighted the importance of further questioning both individuals, given the gravity of the crime, which has sent shockwaves through Kolkata’s medical community and beyond.

The CBI’s counsel explained that detectives were yet to gather any solid evidence of gang rape in connection with the incident. The lack of cooperation from the accused, according to the CBI, was making it difficult to ascertain crucial details related to the case.

As the CBI stated in court-

“The agency stated that its investigators have yet to find any evidence of gang rape in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case.”

The central agency further mentioned that despite extensive investigations, they had not found concrete proof linking Ghosh and Mondal directly to the rape or murder of the postgraduate doctor, whose body was discovered in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The CBI counsel also submitted that its sleuths have not yet found any evidence proving any direct involvement of Ghosh and Mondal in the rape or murder of the postgraduate doctor whose body was found in the hospital’s seminar room on August 9.

This admission, however, does not exonerate the two accused as the investigation continues to unfold. The CBI has made it clear that the probe is far from over, and there are several aspects of the case that need further exploration.

In a critical revelation during the court proceedings, the CBI disclosed that both Ghosh and Mondal had been in contact several times on the very day that the doctor’s body was recovered. This raises suspicions about their involvement or potential knowledge of the incident. According to the CBI, the call records of the two accused revealed that they had spoken multiple times that day, and this information is being closely analyzed.

The counsel of the central agency also said that the arrested duo had spoken to each other several times on the day when the body of the doctor was recovered.

Further analysis of their call records also indicated that both individuals had made several phone calls to other numbers on the same day, prompting the CBI to investigate these leads.

As the counsel for the CBI stated-

“According to the call records of both Ghosh and the policeman, the CBI discovered multiple calls made to certain numbers on that day and needs to investigate further.”

These call records have emerged as a focal point of the investigation, and the CBI hopes that further questioning of the accused during their extended custody will shed more light on these communications and their relevance to the case.

Taking into account the arguments presented by the CBI and the need for further investigation, the court extended the remand of Dr. Ghosh and Mondal for an additional three days, until September 20. This decision was made to allow the investigative agency more time to interrogate the duo and gather further evidence.

The court then extended the remand of both of them for another three days till September 20.

The case has garnered widespread attention since Dr. Ghosh and Mondal were arrested by the CBI on September 15 in connection with the rape and murder of the postgraduate doctor. These arrests came after a detailed investigation was launched into the heinous crime, which had initially shocked the medical fraternity and the wider public.

It is worth noting that this was not Dr. Sandip Ghosh’s first encounter with the CBI. The former principal of RG Kar Hospital had previously been arrested by the same agency on September 2, although that arrest was related to his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the hospital. Alongside him, three other accomplices were also taken into custody by the CBI in connection with the financial crimes. The dual charges of financial misconduct and the rape and murder case have compounded the legal troubles facing Dr. Ghosh.

Ghosh was arrested earlier by the same agency on September 2 for his alleged involvement in the financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital. Three of his accomplices have also been arrested by the central agency.

The investigation into the rape and murder case took a turn when a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested by the Kolkata Police. His arrest added another layer of complexity to the case. After his arrest, the case was transferred to the CBI on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, which sought a more thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of the doctor.

A Kolkata Police civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the rape and murder case which is now being investigated by the CBI on an order of the Calcutta High Court.
