Dr. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch on Monday (2nd sept) night for alleged corruption and financial misconduct at the state-run hospital. He appeared in court on Sept 3rd and was remanded to 8 days in custody, with the next hearing scheduled for September 10.

Kolkata: Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was verbally attacked by an angry mob near a local court yesterday (3rd Sept).

A man even attempted to slap him as security escorted him to a vehicle. Dr. Ghosh faces severe criticism for his handling of the response after a 31-year-old doctor was found raped and murdered in the hospital on August 9. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage.

Amid the outrage following the horrific crime, Dr. Ghosh resigned as principal of RG Kar Medical College, stating that he “couldn’t endure the social media humiliation.” However, the West Bengal government appointed him as the principal of another medical college in Kolkata just hours later—a decision that has faced significant criticism.

Mamata Banerjee Government has now suspended him for alleged financial misconduct, and the investigation, originally handled by the state police, was transferred to the CBI by order of the Calcutta High Court.

A former colleague has accused Dr. Ghosh of corruption linked to the doctor’s death and approached the High Court with these allegations.

Dr. Ghosh has faced significant criticism from both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court regarding the hospital’s handling of the rape and murder of a doctor on its premises.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud remarked,

“Why was the FIR filed almost 14 hours after the body was discovered? The principal should have immediately gone to the college and ensured the FIR was filed.”

The high court also questioned why the Kolkata Police had to file an unnatural death case when the hospital authorities had not lodged a formal complaint.

“Given that the victim was a doctor at the hospital, it is surprising that neither the Principal nor the hospital filed a complaint. This omission is a serious lapse, raising suspicions,”

the court stated.

Additionally, the court questioned the “immediate urgency” of the state government’s decision to appoint Dr. Ghosh as the principal of another college just hours after his resignation.
