KOLKATA: Today (3rd Sept): Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been remanded to 8 days in CBI custody following his arrest on charges of financial misconduct related to the state-run institution.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Ghosh along with Biplav Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan.
A special CBI court in Kolkata approved 8 days of custody, short of the 10 days requested by the CBI. The accused are set to appear before the court again on September 10.
The CBI informed the Alipore Judges’ Court,
“We have recently apprehended four individuals. There is an extensive network that needs to be uncovered, so we are requesting their interrogation. We require their custody to reveal the full extent of this network.”
On Monday, the federal agency detained Ghosh, his security guard, and two vendors who supplied materials to the hospital where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered last month.
The CBI has named Ghosh in an FIR and charged him under Section 120B of the IPC (criminal conspiracy), in conjunction with Section 420 IPC (cheating and dishonesty) and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The court also denied bail to Afsar Ali Khan, while the other three did not request bail. Ghosh resigned from his position on August 12, shortly after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the hospital, an incident that led to nationwide protests over the safety of doctors.
The investigation into RG Kar Medical College has revealed allegations of corruption, including financial misconduct and misuse of resources. A video surfaced showing Khan threatening a former principal, and allegations have been made against Khan for selling biomedical waste.
In 2023, Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent, accused the quartet of corruption in a letter to the state vigilance department.
The CBI has charged the accused with criminal conspiracy, cheating, dishonesty, and violations under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The case was transferred from the Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
Ghosh, who served as principal from February 2021 to September 2023 and briefly returned to his position in October 2023, was still in office during the rape-murder incident on August 9. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended Ghosh’s membership following the case.
