The CBI filed a chargesheet in the RG Kar Hospital financial irregularities case, naming former principal Sandip Ghosh as the main accused along with four others. However, the special court in Alipore declined to accept the chargesheet. The rejection was due to the absence of mandatory official approval from the West Bengal government. This procedural lapse delayed further legal action in the case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet regarding financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital, naming former principal Sandip Ghosh as the primary accused, according to an official statement.
However, the Special CBI court in Alipore did not accept the chargesheet due to the lack of official approval required to file against a state government employee.
An official explained,
“The West Bengal government needs to approve a chargesheet that includes its employee’s name before it can be submitted to the court. In this case, the approval has not yet been obtained.”
Both Ghosh and Dr. Pandey are associated with the state-run hospital.
The chargesheet submitted nearly three months after Ghosh’s arrest on September 2, linked to the financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This case drew national attention after the body of an on-duty medic was discovered in a seminar room in August.
Allegations suggest that the financial fraud persisted for over three years, involving rigged tenders for medical equipment purchases, with Ghosh allegedly aiding his close associates in securing these contracts. Ghosh suspended 26 days following the discovery of the medic’s body. On August 23, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital from a state-formed Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI.
This decision came in response to a petition from Dr. Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the facility, who called for an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into multiple alleged financial misconducts during Ghosh’s principalship. In his petition, Ali accused Ghosh of illegally selling unclaimed corpses, trafficking biomedical waste, and awarding tenders in exchange for commissions from suppliers of medicines and medical equipment.
Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from February 2021 until September 2023, is at the center of this investigation. His tenure at the institution has been marred by controversy, especially in light of his brief removal and subsequent reinstatement.
Dr. Ghosh was transferred in October 2023 but inexplicably resumed his role at the hospital within a month, a move that raised many eyebrows. His position at the hospital continued until a tragic incident occurred—the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor, which led to his removal from the post.
The incident involving the trainee doctor further complicated Dr. Ghosh’s tenure, prompting his immediate removal from RG Kar Hospital. However, in a swift and controversial decision by the Mamata Banerjee-led government, he was reinstated to a similar position at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMC) within hours of his removal.
This decision triggered widespread backlash from CNMC students, leading to Dr. Ghosh being placed on indefinite leave pending the ongoing corruption investigation.
