Court Defers Rahul Gandhi Defamation Case to April 3: “Lawyers Were on Strike”

Today, On 20th March, The court postponed the hearing in Rahul Gandhi’s defamation case due to an ongoing lawyers’ strike. The case, which has drawn significant political attention, remains unresolved as legal proceedings face delays. The strike has affected court schedules, leading to an indefinite wait for the next hearing. Authorities are yet to announce a new date for the proceedings.

Sultanpur: A special MP/MLA court postponed the hearing in a defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to April 3 due to an ongoing lawyers’ strike.

Advocate Kashi Prasad Shukla, representing the Rae Bareli MP, confirmed that no legal proceedings could take place because of the strike.

He stated,

“The hearing was scheduled for today, but since the lawyers were on strike, the court could not conduct any proceedings. The next hearing has now been set for April 3,”

The last hearing occurred on March 6.

This defamation case dates back to 2018 when local BJP politician Vijay Mishra filed a complaint regarding allegedly derogatory remarks made by Gandhi during the Karnataka elections.

After nearly five years of legal proceedings, the court issued a warrant for Gandhi’s arrest in December 2023. He surrendered in court in February 2024 and was granted bail on two sureties of Rs. 25,000 each.

Gandhi recorded his statement on July 26, pleading not guilty and asserting that the case is part of a political conspiracy against him.

Earlier this year, hearings were repeatedly postponed due to lawyers’ strikes and the illness of Gandhi’s counsel. On February 11, Shukla completed the cross-examination of the complainant.

The defamation case against Rahul Gandhi dates back to 2018, when Vijay Mishra, a local BJP politician, filed a complaint over allegedly derogatory remarks made by Gandhi during the Karnataka elections. Mishra claimed that Gandhi’s statements defamed him and the BJP, prompting legal action.

The case was filed in the MP/MLA court, where proceedings have faced multiple delays. Recently, a lawyers’ strike led to the postponement of the hearing, further extending the legal battle.

The case involves key legal aspects, including cross-examination, bail, and the possibility of an arrest warrant if required. Gandhi’s legal team has argued that the case is politically motivated, labeling it a political conspiracy.
