The trial for the rape and murder at R.G. Kar Hospital commenced at Sealdah Court. The court will begin by recording the statements of the victim’s parents, who are the first two witnesses in the case.
In total, 128 witnesses, including junior doctors, Kolkata Police officers, and forensic experts, are expected to testify, with their statements being documented step by step.
However, the victim’s parents will be the first to provide testimony.
At around noon, a CBI officer visited the victim’s doctor’s residence. The victim’s father, who was in a CBI vehicle, left for the agency’s office, from where he is expected to proceed to court.
Before departing, the victim’s father stated,
“I am going to the CBI office.”
After the father, the victim’s mother will testify in court.
From Monday, hearings in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case will take place daily. Just a day after the incident, the Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case. His name is the sole one mentioned in the charge sheet filed by the CBI. Last Monday, the charge was framed against the accused at Sealdah Court, and the trial is now set to begin.
On August 9, the body of a female doctor discovered in a seminar room on the fourth floor of R.G. Kar’s emergency department. She was reportedly raped and murdered. Initially, the Kolkata Police led the investigation, arresting the civic volunteer from the Fourth Battalion barracks.
Later, under a High Court order, the investigation was transferred to the CBI. On October 7, the CBI filed the charge sheet, naming only the civic volunteer as the accused, 58 days after the body was found.
87 days after the R.G. Kar incident and 28 days after the CBI submitted the charge sheet, the charge was formally framed last Monday at Sealdah Court.
The court confirmed that the trial would begin on November 11, with daily hearings scheduled. According to the CBI’s lawyer, the trial is based on the charge sheet.
Despite the trial’s start, controversy continues to surround the case. Following the charge framing, the accused civic volunteer, from inside a prison van, insisted on his innocence. He shouted that he was being “framed” and blamed the government.
From the prison van window, he said,
“I have been silent all this time. I did not commit rape and murder. No one is listening to me. The government is framing me. I have been silent all this time.”
He further claimed that he was being framed to protect the “real” perpetrators.
