BENGALURU: Today(on 17th June), Former Karnataka Chief Minister and prominent BJP leader, BS Yediyurappa, presented himself at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office for an inquiry linked to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) case filed against him. This development comes as part of the ongoing investigation into allegations of molestation involving a minor girl.
Prior to his visit to the CID office, Yediyurappa briefly addressed the media, stating-
“I am heading to the CID now,”
affirming his intention to cooperate fully with the inquiry into the serious allegations.
Karnataka BJP President, BY Vijayendra, expressed his confidence in the judicial process.
He remarked-
“Regarding the new case against Yediyurappa ji, we have faith in the court. He is appearing before the investigation agency today and will fully cooperate. He will provide all necessary information during the SIT inquiry, ensuring there are no concerns.”
Vijayendra’s statements highlight the BJP’s stance of solidarity and trust in the legal system as Yediyurappa faces these accusations.
Amid these legal challenges, Yediyurappa also took the opportunity to criticize the state government’s recent economic decisions, particularly the increase in fuel prices.
He voiced his concerns strongly, stating-
“The people of the state are already grappling with numerous challenges, including the burden of rising prices. The state government’s decision to hike petrol and diesel prices is unjustifiable and should be revoked without delay to alleviate the suffering of the people.”
His remarks reflect the frustration of many citizens grappling with the financial strain caused by the price hikes.
Yediyurappa, who arrived in Bengaluru from New Delhi on Saturday, also addressed the media at the airport regarding the non-bailable warrant issued against him in the ongoing POCSO case. He described the situation as causing “necessary confusion,” suggesting that it was a tactic employed by his adversaries. He confidently asserted, “The people will teach them a lesson,” referring to those he believes are orchestrating these “tricks” against him.
The case has garnered significant attention, given Yediyurappa’s influential position within the BJP and Karnataka politics. His appearance before the CID and his outspoken criticism of the state government’s policies underline the complexity of his current political and legal situation.
As the CID continues its investigation, the political landscape in Karnataka remains tense. Supporters of Yediyurappa are keenly watching the developments, hopeful that the judicial process will clear him of the serious charges. Meanwhile, the opposition and critics are using this moment to scrutinize the actions and policies of the BJP leadership.
The Karnataka High Court on Friday issued an order to halt the coercive proceedings of arrest and detention against former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa until the next date of hearing. This judicial intervention followed a letter from Yediyurappa, in which he volunteered to appear before the police on June 17.
The High Court’s decision came just a day after a Bengaluru court issued a non-bailable warrant for Yediyurappa’s immediate arrest. The warrant was in connection with allegations of sexual assault against a minor girl under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, a law that deals with sexual assault cases against minors.
The controversy has its roots in March when the mother of the alleged victim filed a complaint at the Sadashivanagar police station in Bengaluru. She accused Yediyurappa of sexually assaulting her daughter, triggering a high-profile legal battle.
Amidst the legal turmoil, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti voiced her criticism on Sunday regarding the Karnataka High Court’s decision to stay Yediyurappa’s arrest. Mufti expressed her discontent with the judicial decision, highlighting what she termed as “selective justice.” She drew a sharp contrast between Yediyurappa’s treatment and that of other former Chief Ministers, such as Hemant Soren and Arvind Kejriwal, who were arrested on what she described as lesser charges.
“The decision to halt Yediyurappa’s arrest highlights the selective application of justice in our country.”
-Mufti stated.
She further commented on the disparity in judicial actions, saying-
“While Yediyurappa, accused of a serious crime under the POCSO Act, benefits from a stay order, other political figures face immediate arrests for much lesser allegations.”
Mufti’s remarks have added a political dimension to the ongoing legal proceedings against Yediyurappa, reflecting broader concerns about the impartiality of the judicial system. The Karnataka High Court’s order to defer Yediyurappa’s arrest will remain in effect until the next hearing, providing temporary respite for the veteran politician.
