NEW DELHI: On Monday (25th March): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) granted the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) a four-week period to present their response against the pollution caused by religious offerings in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.

This decision emerged during a session where the tribunal addressed the pollution issues based on a media report highlighting the detrimental effects of wasting religious items, particularly flowers and garlands encased in polythene bags, on these water bodies.

Justice Prakash Shrivastava, heading the NGT bench, highlighted the absence of a substantial response from the DPCC regarding this environmental issue.

The bench led by Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, acknowledged the counsel’s commitment to delivering a comprehensive action plan within the allotted timeframe.

A prior session on March 18 revealed a similar stance from the UPPCB, requesting additional time to present their response. The bench posted the matter on July 3 for further proceedings, anticipating progress reports from both pollution control boards.
