Thane: Eleven police personnel in Maharashtra’s Thane district have been suspended over alleged negligence following two security breaches at a court, an official confirmed on Thursday(26th Dec).

A 22-year-old murder suspect threw a slipper at a judge during a hearing in a sessions court in Thane districtMaharashtra, on Saturday. The slipper missed the judge and instead struck a wooden frame in front of his desk, landing near the bench clerk, according to police reports.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at the Kalyan court, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused, Kiran Santosh Bharam. He was appearing before District and Additional Sessions Judge R G Waghmare for his murder case.

In a separate incident, a video surfaced on social media showing a private security guard carrying a gun within the sessions court premises, violating rules, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Atul Zende.

The department has taken action against both the man and the private guard. Additionally, 11 policemen responsible for maintaining order and security on the court campus, including one police officer, were suspended.

“The suspension was necessary as initial findings indicated negligence and dereliction of duty during these incidents,”

DCP Zende explained to the media.

As a result, the police registered an FIR against Bharam under sections 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duty) and 125 (acts endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) is a proposed law to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It updates and revises sections to make them clearer and more relevant.

Section 125: Acts That Endanger Life or Safety of Others

This section is about actions that can put someone’s life or safety in danger. Even if no harm happens, the act is punishable if it creates serious risk.

  • Includes actions like careless driving or risky behavior in public places.
  • Focuses on acts done intentionally or carelessly that can cause harm.
  • Punishment depends on how serious the risk or danger is.

Section 132: Stopping a Public Servant from Doing Their Duty

This section is about cases where someone uses physical force or threatens a government worker to stop them from doing their official work. Such actions are a crime because they disturb the work of the government.

Key Points:

  • The person must intentionally try to stop the government worker.
  • The worker must be a public servant doing their duty.
  • Punishment can include jail time, a fine, or both, depending on how serious the action is.
