The summons were issued on Thursday following the Karnataka Police CID’s chargesheet against Yediyurappa on June 27.

Bengaluru: On 4th July: A Bengaluru court summoned former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to appear on July 15 in connection with a POCSO Act case. The BJP leader is accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl. The summons followed a chargesheet filed by the Karnataka Police’s CID on June 27.

On June 28, the Karnataka High Court extended its interim order preventing the CID from arresting Yediyurappa, allowing the prosecution to file objections to his petition seeking to quash the FIR.

The CID chargesheet alleges that on February 2, the victim and her mother visited Yediyurappa at his Bengaluru residence in Dollar Colony, seeking help for a previous sexual assault case. During their conversation, Yediyurappa allegedly held the girl’s wrist, then took her to a meeting room, locked the door, and questioned her about the earlier assault.

The chargesheet claims he attempted to assault her, but she pushed him away and demanded he open the door. He then allegedly gave her cash before leaving the room.

Yediyurappa reportedly gave the girl’s mother money and claimed he couldn’t help them. His aides, Arun, Rudresh, and Mariswamy, allegedly brought the mother and daughter to his residence, with Arun ensuring the mother deleted a video from her phone. On Yediyurappa’s instructions, Rudresh allegedly paid the victim Rs 2 lakh.

BS Yediyurappa, a senior BJP leader, has served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka multiple times. His tenures include 2008-2011, a brief period in May 2018, and again from July 2019 to 2021. Yediyurappa’s resignation in 2021 came after weeks of speculation and political uncertainty. During his resignation announcement, he was visibly emotional, stating that the people of the state had lost faith in the government.

Following Yediyurappa’s resignation, Basavaraj Somappa Bommai succeeded him, becoming the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka. Bommai held the position from July 2021 until May 2023. The BJP has recently announced Bommai as its candidate for the Haveri constituency in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The case was registered against Yediyurappa on March 14 based on the mother’s complaint. He was questioned by the CID on June 17. The victim’s mother, who filed the complaint, died in May from lung cancer.
