A Mumbai special court canceled the bailable warrant against former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, who appeared in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, after previously missing hearings due to illness. The trial is nearing conclusion, and all accused are now required to attend daily hearings. The next hearing is scheduled for Friday.

Mumbai: A special court in Mumbai on Thursday cancelled the bailable warrant issued against former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur after she appeared in person in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case.
The special court, which handles cases under the National Investigation Agency (NIA), had issued the bailable warrant against Thakur in November 2024 after she failed to appear before it on several occasions. The trial is in its final stages, and the court had directed all accused to attend the hearings daily.

On Thursday, Thakur appeared before the court and filed an application seeking cancellation of the warrant, stating that she was unable to attend earlier hearings due to illness and hospitalization. Accepting her plea, the court revoked the bailable warrant but directed her to remain present on Friday.
The case relates to the September 29, 2008 Malegaon blast, where a motorcycle loaded with explosives detonated near a mosque, killing six people and injuring more than 100 in Malegaon, about 200 kilometers from Mumbai.
Apart from Thakur, other accused include Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit and retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay. They have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The case was initially investigated by Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) but was later transferred to the NIA in 2011. The special court framed charges against the accused in October 2018, and it is currently hearing final arguments.
With the trial nearing conclusion, the court’s directive for daily attendance of the accused indicates that a verdict may be expected soon. The next hearing is scheduled for Friday, where Thakur and the other accused are required to be present.
