New Delhi: Today, On May 22, Lipika Mitra, the wife of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti, has taken legal action against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

She has filed a criminal complaint in a local Delhi court, saying that the minister made defamatory and insulting statements about her.

The court has taken note of the matter and is now moving forward with the legal process.

The complaint was registered before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Paras Dalal, who took cognizance of the allegations.

He stated in the court order that,

“the proposed accused is to be given opportunity of being heard.”

This means the court has decided that Nirmala Sitharaman must be informed about the complaint and will be given a fair chance to respond to the allegations in court.

The judge also said in the court records,

“Fresh case for making and publishing defamatory, derogatory and libelous remarks in print and electronic media against the complainant received by way of assignment. It be checked and registered.”

This statement officially confirms that a new defamation case has been filed and will now be processed as per legal rules.

Following this, the court issued a notice to Nirmala Sitharaman on May 19, asking her to appear or respond to the matter by June 12.

The case is related to alleged statements made by the Union Minister that Lipika Mitra believes damaged her reputation and caused mental distress.

Defamation is a serious legal matter in India. It involves making false and harmful statements about a person, which can hurt their dignity or image in public.

According to Indian law, if such statements are made knowingly and cause reputational damage, the affected person can file a criminal or civil complaint seeking justice.

Now, with the notice sent, the next hearing will take place on June 12, where the Finance Minister or her legal representative will be expected to present her side.

The court will then decide the future course of this case based on evidence and arguments from both parties.

This matter has drawn public attention, especially because it involves a senior central government minister and a person closely related to an opposition party leader. Political and legal observers will be watching closely to see how the case develops.
