Four arrested in South Calcutta Law College rape case, including ex-student and guard, remanded till July 22. Police probe continues as court hears shocking allegations and awaits forensic reports.
Kolkata: On July 8, 2025 – In a serious development in the South Calcutta Law College rape case, the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Alipore has sent all four accused to 14 days of judicial custody, extending till July 22.
The accused are Monojit Mishra (31), a former student and non-teaching staff member, two current students—Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) and Zaib Ahmed (19)—and the security guard on duty during the incident, Pinaki Banerjee (55).
All four have been charged with multiple offences, including gang rape, wrongful confinement, kidnapping, and causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons.
The survivor had filed a police complaint on June 26, alleging that she was sexually and physically assaulted by Mr. Mishra inside the guard’s room and the washroom on the evening of June 25.
She further stated that Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay were guarding the location and recorded the act.
The complaint also said that the security guard, Mr. Banerjee, vacated the guardroom on the instructions of the other accused and did not help her, even though he was present at the scene.
During the hearing on July 8, the lawyer appearing for accused Monojit Mishra raised serious questions about the police investigation.
He alleged that
“the accused was being pressured by the police to sign blank papers”
and also questioned the investigation’s credibility by asking,
“why the investigating officer did not obtain the survivor’s call data records.”
Meanwhile, the public prosecutor took a strong stand during the hearing and assured the court that
“none of the culprits behind the heinous crime will be spared.”
He informed the court that although the medico-legal examinations have been completed,
“some of the forensic reports pertaining to biological samples are yet to be received.”
The defense counsel representing Mr. Pinaki Banerjee, the security guard, also raised an important point in court. He questioned
“the role of and the action taken against the higher authorities of the college.”
As part of the ongoing investigation, all four accused were recently taken to the South Calcutta Law College premises for a crime scene reconstruction exercise to understand the sequence of events and corroborate the survivor’s statement.
The case has drawn massive attention from the public and legal community alike, with growing concerns over campus safety and institutional accountability.
As the forensic reports are awaited, further proceedings are expected to shed more light on the involvement of each accused and the lapses, if any, on the part of the college administration.
The court has fixed the next hearing for July 22, when the judicial custody period ends.
