A Kolkata court has instructed the CBI to submit a progress report by February 24 regarding the rape and murder case of a doctor, following the sentencing of convict Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment.

Kolkata: A special court in Kolkata has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a fresh progress report by February 24 in connection with its probe into the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The CBI took over the case following an order from the Calcutta High Court. The agency filed a charge sheet on October 7, and charges against civic volunteer Sanjay Roy were framed on November 4. On January 20, the trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment.
Notably, the victim’s parents have expressed that they do not want the death penalty for Roy.
Meanwhile, Calcutta High Court Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam has recused himself from hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal in the RG Kar case, citing personal reasons. The case will now be transferred to another division bench for further hearing.
The PIL was originally filed in November when the RG Kar-related movement by junior doctors was at its peak. The petition sought the registration of an FIR against Goyal for allegedly revealing the identity of the victim while speaking to the media.
The division bench had earlier directed the Union Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) to be a party in the case since it is the cadre-controlling authority for central service officers, including IPS officers like Goyal.
With the special court setting February 24 as the deadline for the CBI’s fresh progress report, all eyes are now on the next steps in the investigation.
