Swati Maliwal Assault Case | Kejriwal's PS Bibhav Kumar, Remanded to Judicial Custody Until May 28

DELHI: Today(on 24th May), Bibhav Kumar, the personal secretary of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a Delhi court has ordered his four-day judicial custody till May 28. This decision comes after Kumar’s police custody concluded on Friday, leading to his appearance at Delhi’s Tis Hazari court.

Controversy enveloped Kumar after accusations of misconduct surfaced regarding his interactions with AAP MP Swati Maliwal at Kejriwal’s residence on May 13. Matters escalated into a legal affair when the Delhi Police apprehended him on May 19, following a formal complaint filed by Maliwal. This development led to the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with delving into the incident.

Moreover, amid the legal proceedings, Bibhav Kumar reciprocated with a counter-complaint against Maliwal, alleging her unauthorized and forceful entry into Kejriwal’s residence on the same day of the incident.

The altercation between Swati Maliwal and Bibhav Kumar unfolded dramatically on May 13. According to Delhi Police reports, they received distress calls from a woman claiming to have been assaulted within the Chief Minister’s premises.

A police spokesperson stated-

“After a while, MP madam (Maliwal) went to the Civil Lines police station. However, she departed shortly, stating her intention to file a complaint later. As of now, there hasn’t been any written complaint received regarding this issue.”

Swati Maliwal, a prominent figure within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), took a step by lodging a First Information Report (FIR) against Bibhav Kumar, an aide to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The allegations she brought forward have sent shockwaves through the political landscape. Maliwal’s account paints a disturbing picture, alleging that she was subjected to a series of violent acts by Kumar.

According to Maliwal’s testimony, the incident was marked by a series of violent acts. She alleged that Kumar subjected her to “at least seven to eight” slaps while she “continued screaming” in distress. Furthermore, she recounted being “brutally dragged” and “kicked” in sensitive areas like her “chest, stomach, and pelvis.” These disclosures have incited outrage and calls for accountability within political spheres.

In response to these accusations, AAP MP Swati Maliwal expressed her distress during an interview.

She conveyed-

“Cheer haran mera uss ghar mein hua aur Charitra Haran mera roz chalaya ja raha hai (My reputation was marred within those premises, and my character continues to be maligned daily).”

Her statement emphasized the deep-seated impact of the incident on both her personal and professional spheres. Maliwal’s narrative illuminates the wider ramifications of such violent acts, extending beyond their immediate physical consequences.

However, amidst the turmoil, accusations flew from both sides. Atishi, another AAP leader, raised doubts about Maliwal’s account, accusing her of “lying” and insinuating a conspiracy orchestrated by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). These counter-allegations further complicate an already convoluted situation, highlighting the contentious nature of political rivalries.

Adding another layer to the controversy, Bibhav Kumar responded by filing a written complaint against Swati Maliwal. In his complaint, Kumar refuted the allegations leveled against him and instead placed the blame on Maliwal for “creating an incorrect narrative.”

He asserted-

“Swati Maliwal forcefully and without authorization entered the Chief Minister’s residence. In addition to breaching the security protocols of the CM Residence, she caused a disturbance and allegedly assaulted the complainant. Moreover, she is now accused of attempting to falsely incriminate the undersigned complainant, purportedly to exert undue pressure on him.”
