"Vijay Nair Mentioned K Kavitha in Meeting with Arvind Kejriwal": CBI | Order Reserved by Court

NEW DELHI: Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi reserved its decision Today on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) request for a five-day custody of BRS leader K Kavitha, who was apprehended in connection with a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scandal. Kavitha, the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, has been incarcerated in Tihar Jail following her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja postponed the ruling to afternoon after hearing arguments from both the CBI and Kavitha’s legal representatives on the matter.

The CBI, in its plea Today, asserted that Kavitha’s involvement in the conspiracy to solicit a Rs 100 crore kickback from a liquor baron was uncovered during the investigation into the Delhi liquor policy case. Allegedly, a southern businessman met with Arvind Kejriwal at his office seeking support, and the Chief Minister purportedly directed him to liaise with Kavitha.

“One liquor businessman from the south met Arvind Kejriwal at the Chief Minister’s office chamber in Delhi on March 16, 2022. He sought the Chief Minister’s support. Arvind Kejriwal assured him and said K Kavitha would contact him in this regard. Kejriwal asked for funds in exchange,”

-the agency disclosed.

The CBI contended that Kavitha, hailing from Telangana and affiliated with the BRS, subsequently arranged a meeting with the aforementioned businessman in Hyderabad. During their interaction, she referenced the individual’s encounter with the Delhi Chief Minister and mentioned Vijay Nair‘s involvement. Nair, identified as the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) media coordinator, is also implicated in the case.

These revelations come amidst a complex legal saga, with Kavitha’s custody becoming a focal point in the ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption surrounding the Delhi excise policy.

The agency also alleged that Kavitha told the businessman that they have to arrange Rs 100 crore upfront money and asked him to contribute 50 crore. The CBI also alleged that one of the accused, Vijay Nair, received kickbacks to the tune of at least Rs 100 crore from a group called South Group (controlled by Sarath Reddy, Kavitha, Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy) on behalf of AAP leaders.

The court, meanwhile, reserved its order on the CBI’s plea seeking five-day custody of the BRS, who is the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao. Kavitha, who is already in Tihar Jail after her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the liquor policy case, was arrested by the CBI Yesterday.

The CBI, which questioned Kavitha inside the jail recently, told the court that she was not cooperating in the investigation and was evasive in her replies. Her advocate, opposing the CBI’s plea, termed the arrest as illegal and accused the probe agency of violating Kavitha’s fundamental rights.
