Pune: The Pune Justice Juvenile Board revoked the bail granted to the 17-year-old individual accused of causing the deaths of two people by striking them with his Porsche vehicle after consuming alcohol at a local bar. The board decided that the minor will be transferred to the Children Observation Centre.

The Pune police requested that the minor accused be prosecuted as an adult, given the severity of the alleged crime.

Amitesh Kumar, Pune Police Commissioner, stated,

“We submitted a review application to the Juvenile Justice Board, seeking permission to try the juvenile as an adult and to have him placed in a remand home.”

He further added,

“The Juvenile Justice Board has informed us of their decision, and the juvenile in question has been remanded to the remand home for 15 days, until June 5th. We are currently awaiting the order regarding his trial as an adult.”

The Pune Justice Juvenile Board stated that the final decision regarding the minor accused’s case will be made based on further investigation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar announced that the 17-year-old individual, who allegedly struck and killed two IT professionals on motorcycles with his Porsche vehicle, will be barred from obtaining a driving license until he turns 25 years old. Transport officials also revealed that the permanent registration of the Porsche Taycan involved in the incident had been pending since March, as the owner had not paid the required fee of Rs 1,758.

The teen presented before a juvenile court after a new case registered against him under Section 185 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Additionally, Vishal Agarwal, another individual connected to the case, produced before a Pune court on Wednesday.

The court remanded him to police custody until May 24.

The car, a Porsche, allegedly driven by the boy who police claim intoxicated at the time of the accident, fatally struck two motorbike-riding IT engineers in Kalyani Nagar early Sunday morning. The Juvenile Justice Board granted the minor bail just hours after the crash.

The police station registered a case against the juvenile driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act, including charges of rash driving and causing death by negligence.

The police have charged the minor with rash and negligent driving and causing harm by endangering life or personal safety under IPC Sections 304A, 279, 337, 338, and 427, along with relevant sections of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Act.

Additionally, Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar announced that cases would be filed against the driver’s father and the establishment that served the young driver alcohol.

The juvenile court, after considering the circumstances of the case, granted bail to the minor driver. Although the details of the bail hearing were not publicly disclosed, police officials stated that the court did not deem the crime “serious” enough to deny bail. However, the court imposed several conditions on the teenager’s release, aiming to address the gravity of the offense and provide an opportunity for rehabilitation and behavioural correction.

The revocation of bail and subsequent transfer of the teenage driver to an observation home not only addresses the immediate safety concerns but also opens up a dialogue about systemic changes needed in the juvenile justice system and traffic law enforcement.
