Last month, the trial court had directed that Jayalalithaa’s assets be given to the Tamil Nadu government. Jayalalithaa was convicted in a disproportionate assets (DA) case in 2014. However, she was later acquitted by the Karnataka High Court. While the State’s appeal against this acquittal was still pending before the Supreme Court, Jayalalithaa passed away in 2016.
Last month, the Karnataka High Court ruled that the Supreme Court, while declaring the case against Jayalalithaa as abated, had clearly stated that “the properties had been acquired by her and co-accused through illegal means.”
The High Court further emphasized that the Supreme Court had categorically stated that “an order of confiscation has to be adhered to by all concerned, including the legal representatives of a deceased.”
