Banaras, UP: A government doctor, Dr. Anamika Singh, testified before a fast-track court on Friday(17th Jan) regarding the sexual assault case involving a student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Dr. Singh stated that she observed scratch marks on the private parts of the victim during her medical examination.
“I didn’t find marks of internal injury. However, I found some scratches on the outside,” said Dr. Singh in her statement.
IIT BHU confirmed that the doctor’s statement was recorded in the court of Judge Kuldeep Singh. Gupta added that “rape-related violence cannot be ruled out.”
The police have arrested three accused individuals: Kunal Pandey, Anand alias Abhishek Chauhan, and Saksham Patel. The case has drawn national attention due to the shocking nature of the crime, and the court has scheduled the next hearing for January 20, 2025.

Initially, a case was registered under IPC Section 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and provisions of the Information Technology Act at the Lanka police station. Later, the police added the charge of gang rape to the First Information Report (FIR).
Similar Case at Anna University, Chennai
A similar incident occurred at Anna University in Chennai, where a second-year engineering student was sexually harassed on campus. The incident took place on December 23, 2023, around 8 PM.
The victim was speaking to her male friend, a third-year student, behind a building on campus when the accused approached them. The perpetrator assaulted the male student and then sexually molested the female student.
The woman immediately filed a police complaint at the Kotturpuram All Women’s Police Station on December 24. Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Arun.
The police quickly arrested the accused, identified as Gnanasekaran, a roadside biryani vendor with a long history of criminal offenses.
In light of the case, the National Commission for Women (NCW) dispatched a two-member fact-finding team, including retired IPS officer Praveen Dixit, to investigate. Over two days, the committee visited Anna University, met with the victim, her family, university authorities, and NGOs, and evaluated campus security measures.
Arun stated, “The victim called on 100 (police helpline) and our police went to the University and arrested him on December 25.”
